This post will show you how to build a DIY easy pine needle witch broom from all-natural materials that you’re likely to find in your yard.
GATHER PINE NEEDLES:
The first step in making your own pine needle witch broom is gathering materials. Pine needles tend to litter the ground in the Fall Season, so it’s a great opportunity to make a DIY Halloween Witch Broom out of materials in your yard. The longer the pine needles the better, obviously! If you’re in the Pacific Northwest area, Ponderosa Pine needles work great for this. So get outside and start gathering!
Make sure to collect your needles so that the sap ends are all on one side. That will be the end where the broom stick connects.
I collected a handful of Ponderosa Pine needles along the roadside here at One Hundred Acres. They are just waiting to be collected and turned into something fun.
FIND A GOOD STICK:
Have fun with this! The stick for your witch broom doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, the more quirky, the better.
I searched the yard and found Cedar stick with some fun-looking moss.
GRAB SOME VINES:
Now we need to connect the pine needles to the broom stick. There are native grape vines taking over some of the property here, so I grabbed a young, green section of vine to use as an all-natural string. Long grass or even some twine could work. Get creative with it! Take a look around your yard and ask yourself what could work as string.
Here are my collected materials:
PUT IT ALL TOGETHER:
Next, I stripped the vines of their leaves, leaving a long green rope-like stem. This will act as the string to tie the pine needles to the broom stick.
Collect the pine needles and insert one end of the stick into the waxy end of the bundle. Try to get an even distribution of needles around the stick. Embed the stick deep enough to give a solid area to tie your vine rope around the needles and the stick.
A second set of hands might be useful for this next step, but I was able to do this myself: Grab your cleaned-up vine rope or twine and wrap it around the top of the pine needles at the broom stick. Tie it off with a knot. Here is a close-up of my vine rope tie.
You can see what I mean by lining up all the waxy ends of the needles on the broomstick side. This is a decorative broom, so don’t worry too much about getting it perfect. Just have fun.
DIY EASY PINE NEEDLE WITCH BROOM:
Voila! That’s it! You made a DIY easy pine needle witch broom from stuff laying around the yard.
Here I am in front of the She Shed with my new broom, lol.
Here is my witch’s broom looking Halloween-y next to our black door of the Front Cabin.
A close-up for good measure. Doesn’t it look cute next to the pumpkin?
Let me know if you tried this and how it turned out. I’d love to see it!
What I like most about this broom is that I didn’t set out to make it. I just started collecting pine needles while hanging out in the yard with my husband as something to keep my hands busy. The ground was covered with them. Suddenly I had a large-enough bundle that I realized I could probably make a quick broom. So I did! Now, when I get tired of it, I’ll simply either throw it back in the yard (lol) or burn it in one of our brush-clearing piles. That might be kind of fun!
